Unsuspecting coffee shop customers in the West Village were in for quite the surprise when a young woman used her “telekinetic” powers to move a guy up a wall after he spilled hot coffee on her computer.
The freaky prank was all part of a marketing stunt for the upcoming "Carrie" remake starring Chloe Moretz. Based on Stephen King's 1974 novel, the film hits cinema in this October 18.
Wire rigging, a false wall, a talented stuntman and some convincing actors created a thoroughly terrifying scene, which is from the looks of customers' faces that were remarkably successful.
The video became viral in YouTube and this is a new kind of marketing strategy by using social media as their platform. This experiment is evidently shows that social media is huge as marketing and advertisement.
In my opinion, I think filmmakers need to think about not just the story they are trying to tell in their film, but how they plan to bring an audience to their film.
I think that it could always be a fun and creative method of doing promotion on the social media because it allows audience or public to share ideas, ask questions, post comments and share links. It also minimizes the use of traditional method of advertising and improves marketing reputation.
Additionally, social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organizations to implement marketing campaigns and in terms of promotion. This experiment is evidently shows that social media is huge as marketing and advertisement.

yes i saw this video on youtube and i can still remember it up till today. from the girl's expression, the guys reaction, the crowd's reaction i could still remember fresh in my head because i was so attracted by the strategy and tactics used by them to promote the movie. i believe they have achieve their mission which is to promote the movie because this video apparently has gone viral in social network sites and people are looking forward for the movie. i believe nowadays social media can spread message faster and easier especially when you have this creative ideas to attract people's attention.
ReplyDeleteIts all about creativity and utilized the media such as youtube etc. In my opinion, social media might also useful during crisis and to attract strategic public. Nice video and it was my first time saw it. Tq for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed comical to watch the reactions of the customers when the girl used her ‘telekinetic powers’. However, the video was actually a publicity stunt to promote the movie ‘Carrie’.
ReplyDeleteDo you see what they just did there? They created a video that is entertaining to get people’s attention and slip in a snippet of a scene from the movie at the end of the video. Oh the beauty of creative thinking and, by using the right medium can create a phenomenon (in this case, internet phenomenon) to get people talking. The video went viral in a matter of days on YouTube and covered by various medias such as Huffington, TheOrange etc about the video!
I agree with Solehah that using social media is not only creative and fun as well as act a platform for the viewers to share ideas, links and comments but it is also an inexpensive way to promote and publicize.
I must say I enjoyed watching the prank and already looking forward to watch the movie once it reached Malaysian shores later :) Thank you Solehah for sharing!

a brilliant way of marketing. eventhough this tactic is not new in the industry, it doesnt get old either. i believe as long something is still enjoyable, accepted, and desired, why not! and yes i gotta agree with you that new media is a super cost-effective medium of almost everything nowadays.
ReplyDeleteabout time we pay extra-attention in new media class, it might be the bridge to our greatest success in future!
Well i have to agree with shila as this kind of tactics is enjoyable. As a practitioner, we have to come out with something like this because it involves interactions with the publics. This is kinda an old trick but it still works
ReplyDeleteWhy cant we produce something like this in Malaysia? I mean, lets put cost wise aside, what i meant is it's very rare to see something this kind of tactic being practise here in our country. We have the same technology, but we failed to make full use of it.
ReplyDeleteAnd if cost is the issue on why we didnt pull off such tactic, I personally think it's a bad excuse. This is mainly because this is a pure genius kind of marketing.
It's unfair to say that our people are not as creative as the western or the Japanese because I think what we're lack of is the boldness in doing something. At this era, it's about time that we start to think out of the box, be bold. And of course, make full use of the new media.
One word. Marketingggggg! Oh wait, Sod already said that. But yeah, great marketing strategy. Definitely caught my attention. But why not right? More companies, organizations and brands should take it out to new media to market a product or service. It will work! Unless you misuse it the wrong way. But no harm in giving it a try. This is just proof of what it could do to boost revenue.
